¿Se imaginan a René Magritte bailando con su esposa Georgette una suave balada de R&B?
¿O al mismo pintor mirando un escaparate con maniquíes con trajes masculinos, parecidos a los que acostumbraba a pintar en sus cuadros y como los que llevaban los cantantes de doo wop?

Son sólo dos de las imágenes que aparecen en la canción de Paul Simon René Magritte and Georgette Magritte with Their Dog After the War que, incluida en su disco Hearts and Bones, de 1983, homenajea el pintor belga.
Sin perder nunca el tono de balada dulce que rememora los sonidos intensamente melódicos del doo wop, la canción es de hecho un homenaje a la larga e intensa historia de amor entre René y Georgette Magritte, que comenzó cuando sólo eran unos adolescentes y duró todas sus vidas: 45 años de matrimonio hasta la muerte del artista en 1967. Georgette Berger fue esposa del pintor, pero también la modelo femenina principal de sus obras: la musa de Magritte por excelencia.

La canción fue inspirada por un par de fotografías de la pareja con su perro, realizadas en la década de los 60 por el fotógrafo alemán Lothar Wolleh, que Paul Simon vio por casualidad en un libro sobre Magritte en casa de la cantante Joan Baez, «mientras esperaba que terminara de hablar por teléfono para continuar ensayando».
El cantautor imaginó una serie de escenas de la pareja con cierto olor a la atmósfera enigmática de las pinturas de Magritte. La misma canción incluye en su letra referencias musicales a cuatro grupos que tuvieron un gran éxito popular en los años 50 y 60 en el género del doo wop: The Penguins, The Moonglow, The Orioles y The Five Satins. El tema es un ejemplo rico y paradigmático de la reinterpretación de la obra de otro artista.
El video del tema, dirigido por Joan Logue y considerado más videoarte que un videoclip (consta en el fondo del Moma de Nueva York), sí que recrea de manera más directa la pintura de Magritte. Como anécdota, en el vídeo, pueden ver a Paul Simon y a la entonces su esposa, la actriz Carrie Fisher, interpretando al matrimonio Magritte.
